When a New Dish Feels Like Home: A Taste of East Coast Malaysian Food in Singapore at Permata

The first bite of an unfamiliar dish can go one of two ways. It can make you pause and ask, “What is that?” Or it can make you smile because, somehow, it feels like something you already know.

Delicious authentic Malay food

That second feeling is at the heart of Permata’s Flavours of the East Coast menu. Running from 1 September to 31 October 2026, the buffet brings together flavours inspired by Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. It is a journey across the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, but it does not require a passport, a packed suitcase or a family member to explain every dish.

Laksam Kelantan

Nusantara food often works through recognition. You may not know Nasi Dagang yet, but rice with gulai ikan, egg and acar jelatah feels like a complete, generous meal from the moment it reaches your plate. Nasi Kerabu Goreng offers another route in, served with Solok Lada Relish and budu. The names may be new, but the pleasure of rice, savoury depth and something bright on the side is easy to understand.

Then curiosity takes over. You notice Ayam Tempoyak Daun Kesum, Daging Masak Hitam  at the Warisan Pantai Timur station. You try a little sambal. You return for more. A flavour that seemed unfamiliar becomes the one you mention on the way home.

The menu is designed for this kind of discovery. At the Kota Laksmana Seafood & Salad Station, prawns, mussels, clams and smoked salmon sit alongside Colek Buah Kelate and Kerabu Mangga. At the DIY stations, you can explore Sop Kambing Pantai Timur, Laksam Kelantan and Kueh Pie Tee with their listed condiments. The experience is not about knowing the correct order. It is about building a plate that makes sense to you.

Malay food heritage is shaped by regional ingredients, cooking practices and cultural influences, so a single description cannot explain every dish.   Tourism Malaysia’s guide to Terengganu also highlights dishes such as Laksam, Nasi Dagang and Keropok Lekor as part of the state’s food landscape. At Permata, these references become an invitation rather than a test.

Dinner adds the grill station, with Chicken Satay, Mutton Satay, Char-grilled Striploin, Udang Bakar Tempoyak, Sata Barramundi Bakar and Ayam Percik Kelantan. Finish with Pulut Hitam, Serawa Durian, assorted Nusantara kueh or Sagu Pengat Pisang.

That is how a buffet earns its place in a changing city. It lets a first-time guest begin with something familiar, then follow a new flavour further than expected. By dessert, the question is no longer whether the food feels like home, but which part of home it has quietly expanded further.

For September and October 2026, Flavours of the East Coast is a halal buffet with a 1-for-1 offer for adults. Check the official campaign page for current terms, explore the Permata experience, and reserve your table. You may arrive for something new and leave with a new favourite.
